Teen Drug Use Down

Special Report - December 17, 2007

The number of high school students reporting use of illegal drugs continues to decline, according to a study from the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. The proportion of students who reported using an illegal drug during the last 12 months fell by 11 percent for eighth and 10th graders and six percent for 12th graders since the mid-1990s. Declining use of drugs like marijuana and methamphetamine was most responsible for the drop, the study said. Teen use of other types of drugs—such as cocaine, heroin, and prescription-type psychoactive drugs—remained steady in 2007, but the number of teens experimenting with MDMA (ecstasy) increased.
