Poll Finds Most Americans Reject Homosexual "Marriage"
Special Report - August 20, 2007
A new poll conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation reveals that a majority of Americans disapprove of legally sanctioning same-sex “marriage.” Conducted among 1,029 people during August 2007, the poll found that 57 percent of respondents believe the law should not recognize unions between homosexuals that mirror the rights and privileges of traditional marriage. The poll did not address the issue of civil unions and domestic partnerships, which provide an almost identical legal structure to traditional marriage in everything but name.
The poll is consistent with past survey results on homosexual “marriage.” A Culture and Media Institute poll conducted in December 2006 reported that 61 percent of the American population rejects same-sex “marriage.” Similarly, a Gallup poll released last year found that 58 percent oppose granting homosexuals the same legal status as heterosexual marriage. At the state level, North Carolinians staunchly support traditional marriage, with an overwhelming 86 percent of voters in support of defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, according to a 2006 Civitas Institute poll.
