Senate Committee Passes Video Poker Ban

Special Report - April 16, 2003

The Senate Judiciary I Committee overwhelmingly passed a ban on video poker today. The bill S6—BAN VIDEO POKER/ALL BUT RESERVATION, would prohibit the possession and operation of video poker machines in North Carolina, except by federally recognized Indian tribes. The North Carolina Family Policy Council raises concerns that the language in the initial bill exempting the Cherokee Indians from the ban could actually allow for Las-Vegas style gambling on the reservation and other forms of gambling including Internet sports gambling. It appears, however, that the language of the committee substitute bill passed by the committee has addressed these issues.
