Speaker Says Lottery Vote May Happen Next Week

Family Policy Facts - July 5, 2002

Pro-gambling forces are working as hard as they can to get the votes needed to pass a lottery bill in the State House. Not only are the Governor and other lottery proponents applying tremendous pressure to legislators to vote for the lottery, they are also encouraging lawmakers who oppose the lottery to "take a walk" on the vote and let others determine the fate of gambling in the Tarheel State. North Carolina citizens should be outraged at this activity, especially as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the tremendous sacrifices made by our forefathers to defend democracy and our elective form of government. Much like abdicating their legislative responsibility and authority by sending the decision about a lottery to the general public through a statewide referendum, encouraging legislators to take a walk on an issue as important as the lottery is shameful. Nonetheless, lottery supporters are scratching and clawing for every vote.
