Defeat Lottery in Legislature
Last year the Lt. Governor of Alabama visited our state at a conference sponsored by Citizens for a Sound Economy. He shared a number of important thoughts with those in attendance. One of his recommendations was to defeat a lottery in the legislature. Another idea he presented was the heavy involvement of churches in the successful effort to defeat lottery gambling in Alabama.

Church Involvement Key
Because citizens of Alabama failed to stop the lottery bill in their state legislature, anti-gambling forces had to raise about a million dollars to be competitive on the referendum fight. Churches were among the largest contributors to the fund to defeat the lottery. Several individual churches contributed amounts of $25,000 to $50,000 to the campaign. The Lt. Governor of Alabama warns North Carolinians to become active early.

Let the People Vote Cop Out
The strategy of the gambling industry in state after state is to "let the people vote." Even in states which have no legislative process or constitutional authority for the people voting on legislative issues, the gambling industry uses this tactic. The Lt. Governor of Alabama points out the strategy as it was used in his state.
